Cat Power, "Jukebox" (Music)

Sounds reawakened by the calm.

Meek indie chanteuse Cat Power, aka Chan Marshall, finally indulged her soul fantasies on 2006’s The Greatest (Matador), a lush endeavor backed by members of Al Green’s Hi-era band. But she sounded more delicate than ever, singing somnolently, ceding ground to her accomplished band. She’s ditched them on this, her second covers album, and sounds reawakened by the calm—she makes Billie Holiday’s 1936 “Don’t Explain” into a supernatural séance and uses James Brown’s 1961 “Lost Someone” as a ballet-like vocal exercise. Most revealingly, a bonus track re-imagination of the Hot Boys’(!) 1999 “I Feel” is mesmerizing, chilling, and utterly spare—no forcing required.
