Little Jackie, "The Stoop"

Race, two-timers and self.

This endearing debut from Imani Coppola’s latest side project deftly explores the ferocious singer’s favorite themes—race, two-timers, herself—over programmer Adam Pallin’s sprightly soul interpolations. The title track showcases her rarely seen laid-back side, but Coppola shines brightest when she’s on the offensive. Men remain a favorite target (“LOL,” “The World Should Revolve Around Me”), but the knives are sharpest for one particular lady on The Stoop’s best cut, “Cryin’ For The Queen.” Over a sly sonic nod to the Dap-Kings, Coppola eviscerates a certain boozy Brit with a fondness for American soul (ahem, Winehouse). Back to black, indeed.
