Jazmine Sullivan doesn't lick her wounds. She wears them with pride. Sullivan's vocal perfection pilots her debut album, Fearless (J Records), and boasts her self-penned lyrics which are filled with struggle and heartache, embodying every inch of the soul star she is.
Whether it be a plea for mercy addressed to her love-stoned muscle in "My Foolish Heart" or a self-initiated overnight rendezvous that unexpectedly turns into mornings and lasts all afternoon in "One Night Stand," Sullivan fights all of love's fears with clenched fists.
Sullivan scores orchestrated, heavily themed production from producer Salaam Remi on "Lions, Tigers and Bears" and bittersweet, flamenco-teased "Bust Your Windows." Both are reminiscent of diverse eras and genres such as Motown soul and doo-wop.
Fearless breaks through inhibitions most virgins to the lion fight fear to rive, let alone roar at. Such a downpour of emotion and talent proves that substance will always prevail over passing fancies. Jazmine Sullivan is here to stay.
