Johnson&Jonson
Johnson&Jonson (Tres Records)
Among the new school of underground MCs to emerge during the past few years, Blu sits at the head of the class. But unlike many of fellow students who satiate fans with MySpace demos and sporadic mixtapes, the 24-year-old Long Beach upstart has dropped three albums in the past two years, including the 2007 gem with DJ Exile, Below the Heavens (Sound in Color).
Blu’s new disc finds him pairing with unheralded producer Mainframe under the pseudonym Johnson&Jonson. Blu strolls with fresh, polished rhymes on “Still Up All Night.” Building a platform for Blu’s skills, Mainframe backs him with crackling soul loops, and even samples The Beatle’s John Lennon for “Hold on, John” (a bonus track) where Blu sheds light on personal struggles. “They say it’s gonna be alright, but I’m just trying to make it through these hard days and dark nights,” he raps on the track. Whether up or down, in deep thought or just slick talking, Blu’s words burn brightly enough to illuminate dim times.
Johnson&Jonson's "Johnson&Jonson" hit stores on 9/23/08.

Wasn't the Blu and Exile record titled "Below the Heavens" not "Below the Clouds"?
