India.Aire's first signed artist is bringing soul back down South

Take a deep rooted southern swag, mix it with an acoustic guitar and plenty of heart-felt lyrics and you’ve just cooked up a regular helping of soul singer Anthony David. In a world full of flashing lights and bust it babies, Anthony David reminds us  we are always just an arms’ reach from our soulful musical roots.

A local celebrity in the Atlanta music scene, Anthony is the first artist on Grammy Award-Winner India.Arie’s new Soulbird label in conjunction with Universal Republic. Anthony’s first and second albums Three Cords and the Truth and The Red Clay Chronicles were released independently on Brash Music Records.

With his new single “Words” featuring India.Arie making waves and the release of his major label debut Acey Duecy, VIBE.com got up-close and personal with the crooner. Here’s what he had to say.

VIBE.com:  Why the name Acey Duecy?

Anthony David:
It’s a compilation of my two independent works, two different sides of the same artist. Plus that’s my nickname now. ‘Anthony David’ went to ‘Acey Duecy.’

What sets this album apart from your past two?

They’re both together now…it is really a compilation of the two [past records].

Is working with India any different now that it was back when you first began?

Really no. We’ve just been building on the same vibe and its just a continuation of what we’ve been doing.

Tell me the first word that pops into your head when you hear your song titles: "Kinfolk"

Family

"GA Peach"
Crunk DJ [laughs]

"Words "

Truth

"Smoke One"

Fun! [laughs]

"Cheatin’ Man "

Scandal

"Krooked Kop"

Oh, I used truth didn’t I? Justice!

There are a couple of voices on “Kinfolk”, who are they?

Good friends that I’ve been working with, Like Shannon Sanders who does a lot of production for India, my man Slick and my man Crook Brown.

On the song "GA Peach" you kinda rap-sing on this one, there’s a certain swag you have…

Well, I’m from the ‘80’s. I’m a big hip hop fan so when I thought of it, I was thinking more like Project Pat. I kinda had his flow on that one.

"Words"-how did India become part of the song?

It was kinda random but not really. We share tracks all of the time...and ‘Words’ was one of the first tracks I made when I got my studio. She was like ‘Now I like that one!’ And by the time it reached my album she listened to it and asked to do a verse…I was like ‘Hell yeah!’

How important has Myspace and Youtube been for you?

It's ridiculous! I don’t even know where I would be if it were not for them. I can interact with people, I can put songs up…network. People can see it. There’s just so many ways you control your own content.

What would you like listeners to gain from this album?

The same thing I get from music after listening to it. Be it escapism, be it something that you can relate to, just bounce my head to or whatever! All of that. The good things I got out of music, I’m just trying to give it back.

Tell me something about yourself that no one knows.

I was in the Army. Well, that’s kinda getting out there now.

I love this song... it's refreshing and it put the soul at ease and it allows your body to lose all tensions. I might say this is one of my top favorite songs. At the same time what should I expect from my favorite artist Ms. Arie and Mr. David
