“I was single back then, but not free 100 percent. I was a prisoner to myself back then,” a soft-spoken Mya exclusively told
Vibe.com from the offices of
Universal in New York City on Wednesday (July 19). “The new album is called
Liberation and liberation means to be set free, so that's where I am in my life. That's how I truly feel. I feel like I'm really open to suggestions, criticism and not fearing anything.
“With the last album I thought I was a little passive and there were insecurities that I did have with my personal life, family, boyfriends and professional life. I was a prisoner to myself back then.”
To set herself all the way free, Mya recruited the production services of
Scott Storch,
Kwame,
JR Rotem and
Tricky Stewart for her new album. She also only invited a few guests MCs, including
Lil Wayne, St. Louis rapper
Penelope Jones and Compton native
The Game.
right Citing various relationships as the culprit of her being closed up, the very single Mya is allowing herself to be open and have fun again.
“It’s just not all about work all the time. You can’t be serious all the time,” says Mya. “You need to go ahead and breathe a little bit and I’m breathing.
Liberation is my most personal album. I think people will truly be pleased with my vocals. I’m not holding back on this album.”
Mya is scheduled to drop her most personal album to date,
Liberation, on Oct. 24.
