Usher, 27, was cast as the slick-talking, seductive lawyer Billy Flynn in the John Kander-Fred musical earlier this year. “Chicago” is the longest running musical revival in Broadway history, and will be showing through Oct. 1.
left “When I heard about the opportunity to play Billy Flynn, it's like ‘that is a great character,” Usher told Associated Press reporters in New York. “The coolest part about it is that he is not a character who has to be consistent.”
"Chicago" originally opened on Broadway in 1975. The revival has been running since 1996 and will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Broadway in November.
The five-time Grammy-winning singer will follow in the footsteps of Jerry Orbach, who played Flynn in the original production more than 30 years ago. Noted actors Taye Diggs, Alan Thicke and Wayne Brady have also played the role of Billy Flynn on Broadway.
After his Broadway run ends, Usher said he will continue to focus on his new record label, Ush Records, and get back into the studio to make another album.
“My eye is set on a successful label, Ush Records. It's a priority for me. I hope to get back to the studio as soon as I'm done. Hopefully I can get that next album out,” Usher said.
