Even with the absence of the Atlanta's self-proclaimed "King of the South," T.I. caged inside his spacious home on house arrest, the third annual Dirty Awards Monday night proved to be a country staple that went on without a hitch.
The
ceremony honors some of the best in southern hip-hop and R&B. The
star-studded event was held in the gigantic Georgia World Congress
Center and was hosted by former "106 & Park" host Free, and co-hosted by comedian Nard Holston .
DJ Drama, the official musical maestro for the evening, spun many oftoday's
top hits while many of the artists anxiously waited for their time on
the main stage. The statue given to the lucky winners was a pimp cup.
Though
ATL was the host for the event, the night clearly belonged to Florida,
with most of its top dogs taking home some of the most prestigious
awards of the night.
Miami's own DJ Khaled took the award for "Best
DJ," while Miami artist Pliestook home the award for "Best New Artist."
After a standing ovation, Plies saluted many of the southern crews including CTE, Grand Hustle, and UGK.
T-Pain won for "Best Song" [“Buy U
a Drank"] and for "Best R&B Artist." In his acceptance speech he
mentioned that "this song would not be as big as it was if it wasn’t
for the homie [Yung] Joc."
Other
award recipients for the night included UGK for "Best Group" and Polow
Da Don for "Best Producer." Scarface took home the “Pioneer” award. T.I. snagged the "Dirty Of the Year" award.
DJ
Khaled took to the stage and performed a medley of songs, including
"I’m So Hood," while fellow winner Plies performed "Shawty."
Hurricane
Chris, who performed "Ay Bay Bay," and Soulja Boy, who gave a rousing
rendition of his hit "Crank Dat," provided other highlights on the
night.
