Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has passed away one day after being shot by an intruder in his home. He was 24.
Taylor was asleep in his Miami home Sunday when he awoke to the sound of an intruder. His girlfriend told police he grabbed a machete he kept by his bed but the intruder fired two shots, one of which hit Taylor in an artery in the leg. According to the Redskins' website, he underwent seven hours of emergency surgery on his femoral artery, but did not survive.
Sunday's shooting was the second invasion to his house in a week, after a suspected burglar broke in November 18, rifled through personal affects and left a knife on his bed.
Taylor was a University of Miami All American who was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 2004 on an $18 million-dollar contract. He was a Pro Bowl safety who had a bright future in the NFL, earning the nickname "Tha Hitman" for his fierceness on the field.
Taylor is survived by his fiancee and their 18-month-old daughter.
