Former Atlanta Falcon sentenced to 23 months for dogfighting charges

Pro NFL star-turned-convict Michael Vick has been sentenced to prison for 23 months for financing a dogfighting operation. He has been given three years' probation.

The 27-year-old former Atlanta Falcons quarterback was charged in July for participating in the the execution of dogs, by way of drowning and hanging, who lost during staged dogfights held at Vick’s property in Surry County, Virginia.

Vick was sentenced Monday after a federal judge considered the fact that Vick was less than forthcoming in admitting any wrongdoing. Vick also tested positive to marijuana in September while out on bond.

During the sentencing, Vick admitted to wrongdoing, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. "I'm willing to deal with the consequences and accept responsibility for my actions," he told Judge Henry E. Hudson.

Vick went on to apologize to his family and children. Judge Hudson suggested Vick also apologize "to the millions of young people who looked up to you."

The earliest Vick can be released is 2009.

I don't mind the dog fights, but he tortured some of them, why. The only time an animal should be slaughtered is if it attacks someone, especially a kid.I've dished out damage to a few dogs in my life time, but only in self defense. As a child and in my early teens I put an end to a few cats, but that's natural for males during the puberty process.I believe losing him football career was enough punishment, that's rough, keep ya head Vick. Now he has no money,no good fame, and a criminal felony record.

Judge Hudson said it all....Vick should also apologize to the millions of young people who looked up to him. It's really sad when grown men behave like animals!!! Even animals do not behave in such manner. I understand when people mistreat their pets because of ignorance BUT this was just plain CRUELTY!!! It just means that MONEY can NEVER buy you CLASS or MORALS!!!! It can never make a man
