You Must Not Know ‘Bout Me: Aretha Franklin Blasts Beyonce

The “Queen” of Soul calls B’s Grammy speech a “cheap shot”

The Grammy Awards went smoothly for Beyonce, who shimmied and slid her way across the stage with her “ultimate icon” Tina Turner. But according to Aretha Franklin, the former Destiny’s Child star has a lot to learn.

On Tuesday, Franklin dropped Knowles some ether, complaining in a statement that the singer got it twisted over who’s really the queen of soul. “I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce," Franklin said in a statement. "However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy."

Apparently, Franklin was turned off by Beyonce calling Tina Turner—whom she collaborated with at the Grammy Awards—“the queen.”

"There is one legend who has the essence of all of those things: the glamour, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent," said Knowles, during her introduction of Turner. "Ladies and gentlemen, stand on your feet and give it up for the queen."

“In addition to that,” Franklin said later, “I thank the Grammys and the voting academy for my 20th Grammy and love Beyonce anyway."

it was just a matter of proper respect .arethha is the queen and although beyonce meant no disrespect to aretha she had to be corrected.her excitement of the moment being and collaborationg on stage with such an icon like tina led to a quasi-meaningless oversight.no real big deal for everyone to get bent out of shape over it.those who are old school and know music history all know that aretha is the queen, she has earned that rwespect without any whatsoever disrespect to tina and her wonderful contributions to american music.beyonce is corrected with a lite slap on the wrist and should take it in love and a bit lesson in protocol.with love to these fabulous entertaining women, big mike miller from the bronx.

I am disgusted and apalled at the fact that a woman who esteems herself to be THE queen would resort to the ways of "common" folks. I am sure that Her Royal Highness could have easily contacted Miss Knowles personally to inform her of her egrigous error thus giving them both a gracious way to settle the sordid affair. Surely a mature black woman like Ms Franklin should understand that it is hard enough in the industry for a sister as is without being trivial and decitful. Weather Tina,Patti,Mary or any diva is called queen it is the way she handles herself that truly makes her one. By the way a "queen" of certain girth should buy a gown that covers all those royal goodies. Or did they teach that in the royal courts?

Is it just me or does Aretha have a lot of these "diva" moments? When ever another singer is referenced as being the Queen, whether it be of Soul, Rock, or R&B, she thinks someone is trying to steal her title. I've always been a fan of Aretha Franklin's music, but I don't see why legends such as her, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Patti Labelle, etc. can't share the title of "Queen". They've all done something to pave the way for young artists today, and are all extremely talented. If Beyonce thinks Tina is the Queen then that's her, so what? Aretha's statement was totally uncalled for.

Ouch Miss B there. Don't think it was intentional though Miss B is too much of a lady to be a hater.
Both Tina and Aretha are giants. But I'll have to say Aretha is definitely the Queen of Soul. Tina Turner doesn't do soul music -OK she has performed R&B & soul but you are a FOOL of you think she's soul. Tina Turner is the QUEEN of ROCK!!!!

wow... whata hater. she should not have said those thing with such arrogance, because there really is no such thing as a queen because for one, everyone is entitled to thier own opinions, and for another, either everyone is a queen, nobody is a queen, or a few people are. it all depends on which way you look at it. Jeez, Aretha. you had your time to shine in the spotlight in the jurassic age, so you should just live and let live. leave Beyonce and Tina the queens alone...
