Deceased star Chad “Pimp C” Butler died of an accidental overdose of cough syrup and sleep apnea, the coroner’s office reports.
The rap star was found dead in the West Hollywood hotel Mondarian on Dec. 4, after traveling to Los Angeles to work on a solo album. Coroners have reported finding promethazine and codeine in Butler’s system. Butler, though, has a history of suffering from sleep apnea, a condition where one stops breathing during their sleep.
Butler was an outspoken force in the beloved southern outfit UGK who scored a hit when they collaborated with Three 6 Mafia on 2000’s “Sippin on Some Sizzurp.”
Cough syrup is a well-acquainted intoxicant in the south, particularly Texas, where Robert Earl Davis, Jr., a.k.a. DJ Screw, a matriarch of “chopped and screwed” style of recording, also succumbed to a codeine overdose at the age of 29.
Butler was laid to rest on December 13 in Port Arthur, Texas.
