National Player of the Year leaves Tennessee a Year Early for WNBA

Candace Parker only had a few hours to enjoy the sweet taste of victory. After leading the Lady Tennessee Vols basketball team to their second NCAA title on Tuesday, yesterday, she had another victory to celebrate: Being the number one overall pick in the WNBA Draft.

The Los Angeles Sparks selected the three time All-American,with their first pick – a move many believe will generate great excitement in a league suffering from poor attendance and television ratings. She will be teaming up with legendary hoops player Lisa Leslie in the 2008-2009 WNBA season.

“Lisa Leslie has been one of my idols ever since I was younger,” Parker told the Associated Press. “I’ve never had an opportunity to play with her… but I’m really looking forward to it. Obviously, she’s a great role model and I’m looking to take in whatever she tells me.”

Parker chose to skip her last year of eligibility and leaves the University of Tennessee with back-to-back national titles and two National Player of the Year nods.
