Two days before the Democratic Pennsylvania Primary, the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN) put together a star-studded panel to discuss the importance of voting amongst 18-35 year olds. The event kicked off the national “Hip-Hop Team Vote: Turn Up The Vote” campaign, which is a collaboration between the Hip-Hop Research and Education Fund (HREF), PowerPAC, and the HSAN.
T.I., Ciara, Jim Jones, Russell Simmons and other celebrities gathered at Temple University’s Liacouras Center Arena where over 7,000 people listened to the panelists. Rapper Lil Mama silenced the crowd and made the audience repeat, “I will make a change. I will turn up the vote. I will show up the vote.” Though not a competition between the panelists, T.I., who is currently committed to over 1,000 hours of community service for a probation violation, was the obvious crowd pleaser. Several times during his speech, he was barely able to speak a word before the audience broke out in applause.
Pennsylvania’s Democratic Primary between Illinois Senator Barack Obama and New York Senator Hillary Clinton will take place Tuesday, April 22.
