The Chicago Sun-Times reporter, who received a copy of an alleged R. Kelly sex tape years ago, has been pardoned from testifying in the singer’s child pornography trial.
According to the New York Times, Jim DeRogatis quoted an Illinois law supporting his rights as a reporter, as well as the First and Fifth Amendments. He spent a mere 10 minutes on the witness stand, and read a statement more than a dozen times in response to questions asked. This same statement was read when DeRogatis was asked if he’d made copies of the tape, which is a felony.
On June 3, DeRogatis missed a morning hearing and was threatened with an arrest warrant.
Judge Vincent Gaughan didn’t uphold the “reporters’ privileges” but did pardon DeRogatis based on the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.
