Mitch Mitchell’s body discovered in a hotel room

He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend. His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated.

Mitch Mitchell, the last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, was found dead in a hotel room last Wednesday. He was 61.

"He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend," Janie Hendrix, chief executive of the Experience Hendrix Tour and Jimi Hendrix' stepsister, told CNN. "His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated."

Mitchell played drums for the revolutionary group that also included bassist Noel Redding, who died in 2003, and lead singer and guitarist Jimi Hendrix who died in 1970.

Mitchell’s most impressive drum work is featured on the group’s hits “Manic Depression” and “Hey Joe.” After Hendrix’ death, Mitchell went on to jam with legends John Lennon, Eric Clapton, and Muddy Waters. Mitchell’s body was found at Portland’s Benson Hotel. He reportedly died of natural causes.
