Yes ladies and gentleman, VH1 has given yet another old school rapper his own reality TV series, but this one is ‘different’ says hip hop legend, and Too Live Crew front man Luke ‘Uncle Luke’ Campbell – whose reality series, Parental Advisory premiers tonight at 10:30 p.m.
The reality series will show Luke as he navigates his relationship with his new wife Kristin Thompson (during the show’s taping, the two were engaged) and attempts to raise his kid in a time when 2 Live Crew’s once raunchy raps pale in comparison to some of the things children see today.
Luke sat down with VIBE.com and talked about his new show, the difference between hip hop today and back in his day, and how he would reform the sex education system.
VIBE.com: So Parental Advisory, in your own words, is a show about what?
Luke: This show gives the public the opportunity to see how I interact with my family. I always told people that I would never do a reality show unless it was like this. Through doing this show, it will allow people to see who Luther Campbell is and who Luke is. It’s a funny show. You can get to know me for who I am.
Most reality shows are still scripted. Is this one any different?
My show is straight raw and real and that’s the beautiful part about it. We deal with things and issues that the everyday average African American family goes through!
You have children, how did ‘the sex talk’ go?
You got to look at the show! [laughs]
If you were a sex education teacher, how would your class be different?
My sex-ed class would be grea! Obviously it would be called "Ask Uncle Luke". In order to get the young people’s attention, (sex-ed) has to be taught to them in a way that’s fun! In a way that’s not so preachy.
How different is hip hop and sex now versus back in the day?
Well back then, with everything I did on the videos you would have the TV stations and everybody being appalled. Now the industry is more accepted of it. The lyrics (in Hip Hop) when we were doing it were funny. Lyrics are more exotic now…when you hear a song like “Lollipop”, it’s more creative. And as far as the music videos go, women are making careers out of that now!
Do you feel like you’ve paved the way for artists like Lil’ Wayne and 50 Cent?
Oh yeah! I definitely feel like I paved the way because at the end of the day, nobody was putting girls in videos like that. Nor were there individuals wanting to own and operate their own records companies. I started that…going to the Supreme Court and fighting for our rights to do what we do. I feel like if I didn’t do that these guys wouldn’t be able to do what they do now.
It disgusts me when I see them pass out these lifetime achievement awards and all of this recognition and I get passed over year after year. When they give out these awards they never recognize me for the accomplishments that we’ve had. But this is why I did this show because people will get to know me. They’ll look at me as Luke just the family man and stop type-casting me.
Watch the first segment of Parental Advisory and be sure to catch the entire series premier tonight on VH1 at 10:30 p.m.
